GATES
I used juniper for this 10ft wide gate. Becky wanted to be able to open the gate from “inside”- so I cut a little opening . Now she can reach through to open the catch.
Each gate is 5ft wide and 6ft tall, so they’re pretty heavy. I attached gate casters to each gate- they’re spring loaded so as the gate swings open the wheel rolls along the ground and if there’s any unevenness, the spring allows the caster to maintain contact with the ground.
Juniper doesn’t come any longer than 10 ft (and I needed 11ft long boards), so I had to use pressure treated (appearance grade) for the top connecting pieces.
Even though juniper is an excellent outdoor wood, it’s sometimes hard to get straight boards. The 2×4 frame for this gate is made with Alaskan yellow cedar- another outdoor wood. I used juniper for the diagonal boards.
If it looks like this gate is crooked- it is. The fence on the left side of the gate is attached to a large redwood tree which is still growing. So as it grows it pushes the fence at an odd angle- that’s why I had to build the gate with a 7 degree angle at the bottom.
