HALLWAY BUTLER

mirror/shelf

My friend needed somewhere to hang her coat, drop her keys and check her face so I built what I’ve been calling a HALLWAY BUTLER.
I used western red cedar with a strip of walnut down the middle.
This piece is 35″ wide, 12″ tall and 5 1/2″ deep and hangs on the wall thanks to a French Cleat.

I always liked working with aromatic cedar–Tennessee red we call it.
The basic structure is made of 3/4″ pre-finished maple plywood. That means they put a very durable and shiny finish on at the factory. then I used 3/4″ solid Tennessee red for all the trim.
Measurements- 32″ wide, 15″ tall and 8 1/2″ deep

I often incorporate arches into my work. I was using Fiji Mahogany on a bridge project and had a lot left over, so I ran it through my planer to make it only 1/8″ thick. now I could easily bend it. I thought a new design for a shelf would be fun, so I used 3/4″ pre-finished maple plywood for the shelves and the back plate. The face of the arch is built from 3 pieces of solid cherry, as is the edging on all the shelves.

Here’s another view. This was a one-off piece. It was too complicated make again.

My favorite—the JEEVES
I added a top to the basic design and a 4″ tall backer for the 3 hooks.
Aromatic cedar throughout.
