LIVE EDGE FURNITURE

Here’s my latest piece- a live edge desk made of big leaf maple. The top is a 2″ thick slab of maple while the base is made of mahogany with a dark stain./

the 2 drawer fronts are made of the same maple.

the top has some beautiful figure.

The other end of the slab shows what happens when 2 branches of the tree connect.

The desk is 66″ long and the width varies from 27″ to 15″.

I started this project with a slab of western maple that was

1 3/4″ thick and almost 7ft long. That gave me enough wood for the top and the 2 “legs”.   The finished dimensions are 5ft long and 17″ high. The width varies from 16″ to 12″ wide.

Turn your head to the left and you’ll see the 2 eyes of the ?????I see an elephants head but that’s just me.

I applied 2 coats of Danish oil and then finished it with a coat of carnuba wax.

The next coffee table  started out as a 9ft long slab of English walnut. Now it’s just over 4ft long and 18″ wide.

The variation between the darker heart wood and the lighter sap wood outlines the animal head.

In this view I can see the 2 eyes and the mouth of a cat???, but in the close up

it’s easy to visualize the head of an Otter???

COMPUTER DESK

Using another 9ft slab of English walnut, I had enough material for the desk top, the “backsplash”, the 2 shelves and the 2 drawer handles.

I couldn’t find a source for english walnut, which was much lighter than the regular western walnut that I used for the frame of the desk and the drawers.

That’s why I stained the live edge top dark to better blend in with the rest of the desk.

There’s a keyboard drawer on the left and 2 storage drawers on the right. I used aromatic cedar for the drawers.

I thought of getting brass handles for the drawers but then I realized I still had some material left over- enough for the 2 handles.

This kitchen table has a top made from 2 thick slabs of blue pine. I cut a straight edge on 1 side of both slabs so I could connect them to make a 30″ wide table.
The base is made of western maple- it was a good color match to the pine.
